‘May she rest peacefully’: Internet sends condolences as ‘Mary Poppins’ star Glynis Johns dies at 100

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA: Glynis Johns, the bright, charming British leading lady who portrayed Winifred Banks, the feisty feminist mother in ‘Mary Poppins,’ died at 100.

Her manager, Mitch Clem, informed The Hollywood Reporter that Glynis passed away on January 4, in an assisted living facility due to natural causes. Her managers mourned her death as “a sad day for Hollywood.”

While her family eventually relocated to England, Glynis was born and raised in South Africa. She spent 20 years working as an actress in England before landing a major role in Disney’s version of PL Travers’ ‘Mary Poppins’ books.

Throughout the latter part of her eight-year tenure in theater and film, Glynis earned a Tony Award for portraying Desiree Armfeldt in the original Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim’s ‘A Little Night Music.’ During this role, she delivered a memorable rendition of the song ‘Send in the Clowns.’

The song was composed by Sondheim specifically for Glynis to perform, as per TMZ.

The actor was well-known for her cheerful demeanor, charmingly breathy and husky voice, and attractive flirtatiousness when she was younger.

‘Glynis powered her way through life with intelligence and a love for performance’

In an emotional statement, Glynis’ manager Mitch paid tribute to the actress, stating, “Glynis powered her way through life with intelligence, wit, and a love for performance, affecting millions of lives.”

“She entered my life early in my career and set a very high bar on how to navigate this industry with grace, class, and truth. Your own truth. Her light shined very brightly for 100 years,” Mitch added.

He continued, “She had a wit that could stop you in your tracks powered by a heart that loved deeply and purely.”

“Today is a somber day for Hollywood. Not only do we mourn the passing of our dear Glynis, but we mourn the end of the golden age of Hollywood,” Mitch stated.

Glynis marked her 100th birthday in October 2023, expressing that she didn’t sense any notable difference at this significant milestone and asserting that she believed she looked good at any age.
